William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy was a renowned professional baseball player who played for several teams. He was credited for sharing hand signals for balls and strikes and safe and out calls. He was a remarkable player and lived to old age of 99.

He was called "Dummy Hoy" because he signed rather than spoke and he was not the only deaf professional baseball player. There was Dummy Taylor.
