Honoring Agatha Tiegel Hanson: A Pioneer in Women’s and Deaf Rights
This handcrafted wood portrait was created by Deafroot artist, Sheri, to honor Agatha Tiegel Hanson (1873–1959), a trailblazing Deaf woman who broke barriers in education and women’s rights.
Agatha was the first Deaf woman to graduate from Gallaudet University, where she delivered her valedictorian address, The Intellect of Women. Her words continue to inspire generations:
“The intellectual of women is… to rise with determination and might and move on till all barriers crumble and fall.”
Sheri brought this historic figure to life through woodcarving and blending artistry, ASL, and heritage in every detail. Each piece reflects Deaf culture’s strength and resilience, while also reminding us of the determination that women like Agatha embodied.
This work celebrates both art and activism, reminding us that creativity and advocacy often go hand in hand.
